Dubai: More than 250,000 workers benefited from a pedestrian safety campaign run this year, aimed at reducing pedestrian fatalities - as they are still considered the top type of road traffic fatality in Dubai.
According to Dubai Traffic Department statistics for the first nine months of this year, there was a total of 2,665 accidents with an estimated 158 fatalities. Pedestrian fatalities numbered around 47. The percentage has declined by around 29 per cent compared to last year.
Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police Traffic Department, said the department kicked off its campaign in February this year by introducing awareness through lectures and educational and rehabilitative care for employees of companies operating in Dubai.
He said that a number of foreign workers were unaware of the driving culture in Dubai and the regulations for safe ways to cross the roads. Pedestrians crossing the roads from undersigned areas are fined Dh200.
The awareness lectures were conducted in workers' residences in different languages, including Arabic, English and Urdu.
