Dubai: The Ramadan Shoe Box Appeal 2009 has raised donations for 8,000 construction workers in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.
Shoeboxes were handed out to people to fill up with toiletries and clothing during the fasting month.
"The contents of the box are simple everyday things which many of us take for granted but it means a lot to the workers and they look forward to it. The items in the box are actually items they have asked for, they are very happy to receive them," said Elle Trow, who founded the charity Helping Hands UAE along with her husband Roger.
The boxes will be handed out at labour accommodations in Al Quoz, Jebel Ali, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.
"Every day we see someone in coveralls, boots and a helmet. There is a person in there, he has needs and feelings too," Roger Trow said.
"We decided to participate in this campaign again because it's not a monetary donation. These are items they actually need," said Pasquale Baiguera, General Manager, Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Media City. "We are a business benefiting from the community, it is only fair that we give back."
The boxes will be distributed by DHL who is also sponsoring the campaign.
The campaign was able to add 500 boxes to last year's count.
"We are desperate to get a warehouse for storage space; currently we are storing everything in our home. This would really help us react when aid is needed in emergencies like fires," said Trow.
