Abu Dhabi: As the General Women's Union (GWU) celebrates its 34th anniversary, various women activists and leaders in the UAE and other Arab countries have hailed the historic achievements of the Union under the leadership of Her Highness Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak.
They acknowledged that the colossal movement transformed Emirati women and nurtured their radiant role in the march of the nation towards development and progress.
They also held in high esteem the great support by President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, as well as Their Highnesses the Members of the Supreme Council and Rulers of the Emirates, which enabled the women's movement to fully participate in the making of a nation.
The General Women's Union was established on August 27, 1975 under Federal Law No (6) of 1974 under the Presidency of Shaikha Fatima, to be an umbrella supporting and organising the women's movements in the UAE.
Commenting on the occasion, Shaikha Ameenah Bint Humaid Al Tayer, Chairperson of the Dubai Women's Association, said the GWU, under the leadership of Shaikha Fatima, "has made miracles possible in this land over the past decades". She lauded the participation of the women in the country's economic, social, cultural and political development.
Chairperson of the RAK Women's Association Shaikha Mahra Bint Ahmad Al Ghurair, wife of His Highness Shaikh Saqr Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, said the GWU had innumerable achievements since its inception.
Shaikha Maryam Bint Ali Bin Rashid Al Mualla, Chairperson of both the Higher Committee's of the GWU and the Umm Al Quwain Women's Association, Shaikha Fatima Bint Zayed Bin Saqr Al Nahyan and Shaikha Aisha Bint Khalid Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Women's Association, also congratulated Shaikha Fatima on the occasion.
