Dubai: Hundreds of labourers protested on Monday in two different work sites to ask for a raise in their salaries, a senior police official confirmed.
Colonel Abdullah Al Ghaithi, Acting Director of the General Department of Organisational Safety, Protective Security and Emergency of Dubai Police, said: "from initial talks with the management and the labourers, it appears to be a protest for a raise in salary, which happened in two locations."
Al Ghaithi said that officials from the labour ministry are trying to settle the matter between the labourers and management.
"In the case of an absence of an agreement it's quite difficult to negotiate a raise considering the current global economic crisis," he said.
Around 300 Al Habtoor contracting company labourer were protesting at the Jebel Ali site and in Deira, said Al Ghaithi.
"The protest in Jebel Ali was completely peaceful and the protestors cooperated with the police. It was controlled within an hour and the crowd was dispersed before heading to the main road," he said.
