Dubai: Three UAE-based thrill seekers have completed a 5,000km trek across India in an auto rickshaw.
Helen Ahern, Philippa Daniels and Jeff McMahan travelled from Shillong to Goa in 18 days. They were joined by their friend Jason Lewis from the US for the mammoth journey, which featured several break-downs, a head-on encounter with traffic and a stretch through politically tense Assam during the Indian elections.
Ahern said: "We arrived in Goa just in time for the final party so I think we timed our journey perfectly! However, we did face a few scary situations along the way, such as the time we were escorted to a safe house by armed police because we were seen as a hostage risk.
"A few teams encountered police bribery and one rickshaw was hit by a lorry.
"The reason we got involved was to get out of our comfort zone and have some fun."
The Rickshaw Run is organised by The Adventurists, a UK-based company that offers numerous once-in-a-lifetime experiences while raising money for charities. The main charities for the Run are Mercy Corps, Frank Water and Save the Children.
