Dubai: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) on Thursday announced the holding of a global walk against child hunger this June to be titled, "End Hunger: Walk the World."
Thousands of people are expected to join celebrities, government dignitaries and staff and friends of United Nations and WFP corporate partners in the campaign to raise awareness and funds to feed children.
The WFP said the worldwide walk will be held over a 24-hour period on June 5.
The UAE leg of the one-hour walk is set to take place in Dubai Mall.
The yearly event was initiated in the UAE by TNT Express in 2003. Unilever partnered with TNT in 2007 while DSM linked up in 2008.
Proceeds of the campaign go to the WFP feeding programme for schoolchildren.
A dirham enables the WFP to provide a cup of porridge, rice or beans to children living in empoverished areas, the UN agency said.
"Every six seconds a child dies because of hunger and related causes. Whether you would like to partake in an internal fund raiser or just join us the day of the walk, every little bit counts. So now it's your turn to step up and help these children wake up to a hopeful future," explained Mark Woodcock, Sales and Commercial Director at TNT Express, UAE
