Middlesex University Dubai, London's first and only university in the UAE hosted its second annual “Anti-Smoking” and “Healthy Eating” week. The campaign included presentations by Dr Barbara Karin Vela and Dr. Stephanie Karl; medical doctors from the Dubai London Clinic. The Dubai London Clinic was the main sponsor of the health campaign.
Dr. Karin Villa spoke of the bad effects of smoking and ways of kicking the habit, while Dr. Karl presented the healthy eating habits for young adults and situations where “Overweight becomes Obesity”.
The presentations were part of a week-long campaign where many activities took place at Middlesex University Dubai's campus in Knowledge Village. Over two hundred students, staff, and visitors took part in the activities which included distributing awareness leaflets, anti smoking t-shirts, and samples of healthy foods provided by the corporate sponsors.
The week was organised by Student Activities Department with the help of the Marketing Department and several staff and student volunteers. Dragana Symons, Student Activities Manager, said that “this is the second year in a row that we focus on the helping smokers see the damage they do to themselves and society, and importantly encourage young adults to eat healthy. Given the countless choices we have in today's environment when it comes to food consumption, it is vital that we eat wisely, and we are grateful to our sponsors for helping us get that message across”. “We strongly believe that healthy minds are in healthy bodies”, added Ms. Symons.
Sponsors for the health campaign included several market leaders in healthy food and beverage brands, namely Nestle, Marmum, Mani & Co Mid-East and Al Ain Mineral Water. Sponsors displayed their healthy products on campus, and provided information on healthy eating.
