FUNN-tastic Winter Camp Teaches Youth About Emirati Way of Life Through Filmmaking Workshops

Young aspiring filmmakers in the UAE learnt about Emirati culture, language and history at the Funn-tastic Winter Culture Camp 2019 held by FUNN, the Sharjah-based organisation that promotes and supports media arts learning for children and the youth in the UAE, and in collaboration with LIGHTS.CAMERA.LEARN Organization whose aim is to empower & educate children through the art of filmmaking from December 22 – 29, at the Sharjah Art Institute.

The camp, which was for children aged between 9 and 15 years of age of both genders, began with a trip to the Sharjah Heritage Museum for the participants to get inspired and come up with interesting ideas to express through film. After an initial brainstorming session, the participants came up with ideas that were discussed and approved. They were taught to translate their ideas onto film, while also learning the nuances of scriptwriting, rehearsals, performing, shooting and post production.

The camp was aimed at young beginners as an introduction to the art of cinema, to give them a crash course in the basic skills of filmmaking. The workshops were designed to help the students understand the language of cinema and learn how to use it as a medium of expression and for telling stories, in this instance about the Emirati culture and history.

Students and young filmmakers who had already participated in filmmaking/editing workshops organised by FUNN earlier and were above 17 years of age were offered internships with the trainers of the camp to learn the intricacies of creating content.

The camp ended with a red carpet event on December 29, where the participants and their families attended the screening of their filmmaking efforts.

Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi, Director of FUNN and Sharjah International Children and Youth Film Festival, said: “FUNN organised this specialised winter camp with Lights. Camera. Learn! as part of our commitment to spreading knowledge about the Emirati way of life, our culture, language and history through the medium of film. We are dedicated to developing Sharjah’s and the UAE’s creative industries by empowering the nation’s youth in media arts.”

“The edutainment camp offered participants an opportunity not only to learn about the Emirati culture but also the craft of filmmaking. Apart from theory, they also had the chance to master the techniques of conceptualising, planning and executing their creative ideas on film. Through these activities we hope to unite filmmakers and educators with children of different backgrounds to help transfer their ideas onto film which will enrich and innovate their education in myriad ways.” Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi concluded.

The ‘edutainment culture camp’ was sponsored by Sharjah Media City (SHAMS) and led by Lights, Camera, Learn’, an international, non-profit organisation that produces localised edutainment content by children, for children.

FUNN aims to nurture a future generation of creative artists in media and film industry, and promotes new media works and films made by children and young filmmakers in the UAE at international film festivals and conferences worldwide. Its larger goal is to foster talent through these festivals, conferences and workshops locally and internationally.
