‘Home’ Grown! Region’S Brightest Young Minds Showcase Engineering Feats At Middle East Electricity 2018



Dubai, UAE – 7 March 2018: 14 undergraduate and four postgraduate projects from 10leading universities across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Egypt are battling for top honours at this week’s fifth Future Generations competition at Middle East Electricity 2018. ThemedSmart Energy - Clean, Efficient and Reliable, the Future Generations competition is a tailored, grassroots platform for participating university students to showcase theirinnovative engineering designs and solutionsto an audience of energy and power sector professionals at the region’s leading trade event for the energy industry. On the opening day of MEE 2018, Birla Institute of Technology Offshore Campus in Ras Al Khaimah presented a unique and innovative Internet of Things-based, Home Automation System Over-the-Cloud project. "Taking the concept of home automation, this project shows how home monitoring and operations can be managed using Smartphone devices, which includes an NodeMCU which will control devices and sensors in the proposed system through a relay controller used to automate home appliances,” said ChetnaNagpal, Assistant Professor, Electrical and Electronics Department at the Birla Institute of Technology, RAK Campus. “An outstanding feature of the system is the capacity toset the timer on a real-time basis, meaning the load can be turned on-and-off automatically without human intervention.” Other participating universities include American University of Sharjah, Global College of Engineering and Technology, Heriot Watt University Dubai Campus, Abu Dhabi University, Higher Colleges of Technology Sharjah, Higher Technological Institute Tenth of Ramadan Branch (HTI), Global College of Engineering and Technology, Higher Colleges of Technology Fujairah Men's College, University of Bolton RAK Academic Center and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).
