As the world’s leading food industry professionals struck business deals across 1 million square feet of space at Gulfood 2018, the world’s largest annual food and beverage trade show, the world’s best baristas were battling it out in the middle of the exhibition floor for the coveted title of Cezve/Ibrik World Champion 2018.
And, after a thrilling three-day contest in the Cezve/Ibrik Championship hosted by Gulfood,SlavaBabych, from the Ukraine, demonstrated his mastery of the art of Ibrik and imagination with coffee to claim the coveted top prize, and bragging rights for the next 12 months.
Slava saw off stiff competition from fellow baristas from the UAE, Turkey and Russia in the final on Tuesday evening, impressing with his signature drink ‘Ruby of Kenya’ blending coffee with exotic flavours including blackcurrant purée, pomegranate shrub, coconut sugar and Kenya gold (edible gold powder).
“It’s a big win! I’m excited to have won this championship,” said a delighted Slava, who has been practicing his craft for six years and works a chief barista at one of the best restaurants in Ukraine.“But the journey does not stop here; I am now looking forward to competing at another coffee competitionto be held in Ukraine later this year as well as in other competitions across the globe. My advice for future baristas to excel in this art form is to always compete, it’s the best experience, to have belief in themselves and never lose hope."
Slavaand fellow baristas competing in front of an expert judging panel on the Ibrik stage in Za'abeel Hall 4, and were judged on their ability on the taste and consistency and choice of their Ibrik, comprising just coffee and water heated in the traditional Ibrik coffee pots, as well as their own signature beverage, incorporating style, substance and choice of heating technique.
