Acclaimed Singapore Maths Centre Opens In The Uae

March 2017, Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Seriously Addictive Mathematics (S.A.M) has opened a centre at Dubai Knowledge Park, making it the first in the UAE and the 15th country to host the award-winning maths enrichment programme. S.A.M will impart private training to school students between the ages of 6 and 12 in the concepts and applications of mathematics, using the globally acclaimed Singaporean educational programme. Announcing the new centre, Mahmood Fazal, Director of S.A.M UAE, and of parent company ITEC FZ LLC, said that it reflects the universal interest in early maths education, and its importance in a country with the world’s largest number of international schools as it prepares for a stronger global position. “The maths is quite simple,” he explains. “Singapore has topped the ranking for mathematics since 1995 on the TIMSS score1. On the other hand, as outlined in the Vision 2021 National Agenda, the UAE is aiming to be listed among the top 15 countries on this list2. To get there, our students must get better.” S.A.M is a perfect fit for the UAE as it easily adapts to different school curricula, and focusses on foundational understanding and thinking skills, rather than rote learning and computational practice, Fazal said. He also emphasised the impact of early education, citing the latest TIMSS cycle (2015 edition), where students who started early scored an average of 10 points higher in Grade 4 Maths than students who started school later. “Understanding mathematics develops core skills like critical thinking, logical reasoning, metacognition and heuristics. Simply put, starting early equates to more advantages over a lifetime.” 1 The international Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study score which evaluates Grade 4 and 8 school students in 60 countries in four-year cycles. 2 The UAE currently holds Rank 39 in Grade 4 Maths, and Rank 23 in Grade 8 Maths on the TIMMS score S.A.M is modelled on Singapore’s famed school curriculum for mathematics using a Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach, which includes concepts, processes, skill-application, reasoning and modelling. The programme is franchised in 14 countries and runs more than 100 centres around the world, and Founder-Director Samuel Chia says its phenomenal success stems from teaching mathematics in the most creative, yet highly structured manner. “S.A.M is based on the national mathematics curriculum used in Singapore for kindergarten through Grade 6, which has been consistently hailed as the best in the world. We offer a combination of small classrooms (up to four students) and more than 30,000 meticulously authored worksheets with incremental levels, which means that irrespective of age or background, every student progresses at an individual pace. “We are glad to open up to the UAE, and believe it is a perfect complement to young school students living here, regardless of which curriculum their school follows. Whatever a child can accomplish at S.A.M., he or she can easily accomplish and then go on to excel at in school,” Chia stated. The S.A.M centre in Dubai is located at Unit G14, Block 2B in Dubai Knowledge Village and is open from 12 noon to 7pm on weekdays and 9am to 6pm on Saturdays. Admissions are currently open, and placement tests are free during the inaugural period.
